When you have guests over for lunch/dinner, do you serve buffet style or do you plate the food for them?

It's usually family that we have over for meals and it's buffet style for the most part. If I'm making pancakes for them, I'll ask how many they want and plate it for them.

It depends what's on the menu.

If it's the sort of thing that comes in specific portions we'd usually bring out plates of food. If it's something more like a bit pot of something (stew, spag bol etc) we'd typically put the pot in the middle of the table and invite people to serve themselves.

I think it's good to stop plating people when they are 6 or 7 years old. My 6 year old son often puts his food on his own plate... already.

When guests are over, typically we continue "family style".... food is in bowls, etc. sitting on the table and passed around. But sometimes, when there are more guests than can sit at the table, food is placed on the counter or wherever and people choose their food and sit wherever they can. It's that way with BBQ's too.
