A loaf of white bread and butter

My friends mother says that when she was a child there was a loaf of white bread and butter on the table every night regardless of what else was for dinner. Was this common in the 1950s and does anyone still do this?

Lots of times for dinner this was on the table. Then the brown and serve dinner rolls appeared and as you know, we have all sorts of dinner rolls.
