How often should you replace your shower head or faucet? How can you tell if they are bad/old before they break completely and start leaking?

I bought a new one when the old one gave up. Shower head was still good, but the hose wasn't. It was a cheap thing. It lasted a year.

I replaced one here at this house when we moved in, but not the other one (because my husband didn't want it replaced). Other than that, we don't replace those things.
